The internet, radio, and TV are filled with companies promising to "get you out" of your Westgate timeshare — but most charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars upfront for services you can often handle yourself at little or no cost.
These third-party firms thrive because many owners don't discover the real facts first. At Timeshare Users Group (TUG), we've helped thousands avoid expensive pitfalls by sharing honest, proven strategies from real Westgate owners.
The good news? You usually have straightforward options:
We've even boiled it down to the essentials in a short YouTube video that explains your Westgate exit options in under 60 seconds. Watch it here and take the first step toward real relief — for free!
Just like with any other Timeshare, all owners have 3 options available to them:
For more detailed help these 3 options are covered in other Timeshare advice articles as well as the TUG Westgate Owner Forum!
This program dubbed "Legacy" provides a service to allow existing Westgate owners to exit their ownership and surrender it back to Westgate directly!
This program can be found here Legacy homepage and includes both an online form, and direct phone number to contact Westgate and begin the process of ending your ownership.
While there is no "catch", there are two requirements for an owner to be eligible to use this program
There is also usually a monetary fee that Westgate will charge you to surrender your Westgate Timeshare back, depending on the details of your ownership
Quite simply, many Westgate owners are unaware that this program exists—and in some cases, the fee paid directly to Westgate can be significant. While Westgate does acknowledge and communicate the program to owners, it is not something the resort aggressively promotes. In contrast, timeshare exit companies heavily market their services because upfront fees are how they make money.
As a result, thousands of Westgate owners feel trapped in their timeshare. A quick Google search often returns hundreds of results, most of which are paid advertisements from exit companies promising an “easy” or “guaranteed” way out—for a price.
Not surprisingly, when owners contact these companies, they are rarely told about options that can be pursued directly with the resort. If owners knew they could explore certain solutions themselves—sometimes with nothing more than a phone call—there would be little incentive to pay a third party. Simply put, there is no profit in pointing owners toward free or low-cost alternatives.
Yes! Once you have completed the process of surrendering your Westgate Ownership back, you are no longer an owner and no longer have any yearly maintenance fee obligations!
Absolutely! Legacy has been in existence for years and was first announced on TUG back in 2018. Since then plenty of Westgate Owners have discovered this info thru TUG and successfully ended their Westgate ownerships! You can view the full discussion thread here that is still active with owners finding it every single week! Give back your Westgate Timeshare.
These are the lucky ones like yourself, unfortunately the rest likely pay some random company a fortune to do something they could have done themselves!
Sadly the majority of Westgate Ownerships have little to no resale value and have to be offered on the resale market for free to have any hope of attracting someone to take it off your hands!
If you wish to investigate this route, we would suggest starting with our How to Sell your Timeshare Guide for more details on how to sell your Timeshare yourself without paying large upfront fees and without being scammed!
TUG provides a completely free option to give away an unwanted timeshare which you are welcome to utilize here: Give away your Timeshare for Free!
A 3rd and final "nuclear" option would be to simply stop paying. This strategy is always suggested as a complete last resort as it comes with potentially negative ramifications that anyone would expect when defaulting on a loan or other financial obligation. We actually cover this specific topic in our Youtube Video series here:
Despite what some third-party companies may claim, this is an official Westgate program handled directly by the resort—not a service provided by an outside firm. There are no intermediaries involved, and getting started typically begins with a simple phone call.
Westgate owners who feel they have reached the end of their timeshare ownership should strongly consider reviewing this option as a potential solution for an unwanted Westgate timeshare. Understanding all available, resort-direct options can help owners make informed decisions without unnecessary expense.
If the cost of this program is not a good fit, other alternatives may still be available, such as offering the timeshare for free to another owner or exploring additional owner-to-owner transfer options.
